The first news on Chiaravalle date back to the VII century a.C. but the real historical origins go back to 1172, when the current Abbey was first built. The 1759 was the year of tobacco: the Manifattura Tabacchi is nowadays one of the most important industries of the Region. Among the important figures that were born in the town it is necessary to remember the pedagogist Maria Montessori, born in 1870, one of the most eminent figures in the childhood education.
